How Does A One-Trick Pony Change Career
âHow Does A One-Trick Pony Change Careerâ Help from our Community âHow Does A One-Trick Pony Change Career?â * No, there's no punchline! Deana has been in the same line of work for the past 12 years. How can she change to a different career when there's only one set of skills on her CV? What's your career history and current job? I'm Senior Office Administrator for a major bank, and I've been in my current job for eight years. Before that, I was a Junior Administrator at another bank for three years, and before that, I was a part-time Office PA for a health centre. How do you feel about your work? I feel like I've been doing it for 12 years! I'm bored, I'm frustrated, and I'm starting to really kick myself for not having moved into a new line of work sooner. I don't want to look back on my life and see nothing but filing papers and bookkeeping and scheduling. It's easy, because I've done it for so long, but it's hard on the heart. I'm embarrassed to tell people what I do for a living because they assume I'm straight-laced and boring, and they'd be right. Not about who I am underneath it all, but my life is boring, and Iâm becoming boring too. I feel like I've filed myself away in a drawer nobody looks in, and even I know I'm too young to be feeling that way. What would you like to be doing instead? In a dream world, I'd love to work in marketing and PR. I don't know what role, exactly, but I know I want to do something creative and communication focused, and I'd give my right arm to go to glamorous events as part of my job! What's the biggest obstacle you're facing? Well, as so many of my friends and family keep telling me, I'm a one-trick pony. My CV is filled with nothing but administration; it's all I've ever done, even as a teenager while I was at school. I've always moved from job to job in the same field because it was easy to do, but now that I want to make a more drastic change, who in their right mind is going to hire me for something different? Can you help Deana? Have you been in a similar situation, or are you in the same boat right now? What can she do to make her career change easier? Do you know anyone she could talk to? Share your thoughts in the comments below and click the thumbs-up button to show your support. Give Deana a cheer of encouragement by hitting the thumbs-up button here:

11 Ways to Improve Branding Without Using Social Media - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
11 Ways to Improve Branding Without Using Social Media - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Social media is one of the most popular tools for brand-building today. What is your favorite unconventional branding tip or practice that doesnt involve these platforms? The following answers are provided by members of Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC), an invite-only organization comprised of the worlds most promising young entrepreneurs. In partnership with Citi, YEC recently launched BusinessCollective, a free virtual mentorship program that helps millions of entrepreneurs start and grow businesses. 1. Attend Industry Conferences Thereâs something uniquely different about meeting someone in person versus online. Thatâs why I try to attend as many industry conferences as possible throughout the year. Itâs a great way to connect with inspiring people passionate about their work, and to look for ways to help each other out. Syed Balkhi, OptinMonster 2. Create Charitable Initiatives Truth be told, for me this isnt about the brand exposure and I dont really go out of my way to promote my brand in the process, though it does become a secondary benefit of the efforts. Weve made a lot of charitable contributions and set up additional opportunities to help the populations in need. This is a great way to give back, and as a secondary benefit, the brands reputation grows as a result. Nicole Munoz, Start Ranking Now 3. Hold Intimate Dinners With Peers In a world of constant digital bombardment, intimate meetings of peers stand out. Being the brand that facilitates these connections is a huge brand-builder. Brennan White, Cortex 4. Create a Customer-Led Consortium One program we started in a business I ran was a client board of directors. Although these customers held no equity in the company, they were repeat buyers, loved our services and products, and understood our vision. In creating a direct line to them, we got vital insight, along with constant evangelism for our brand. They brought in as many clients are our salespeople, for free! Benjamin Berman, Optimize For Growth 5. Host Sponsorship Events Sponsoring events is a great way to build up your brand. Identify what events you want your brand associated with and establish a presence. This will allow you to shape the persona you want your brand to have, and create a footprint within a specific community that falls under the umbrella of overall target audience. Duran Inci, Optimum7 6. Start an Email List Theres something more intimate about sending an email to your subscribers than a social media post. My favorite emails are from brands that treat their email list like a private club. Share secrets with your subscribers and dont be afraid to get more personal with them. Let them get to know the person behind the business. Jared Atchison, WPForms 7. Send Stickers It sounds simple because it is: Send your customers little branded gifts. In a world in which people are inundated with ads, promotions and brands wanting something from them, you can create delightful moments by simply giving instead of taking. Stickers are an easy â" and affordable â" gift, but it can be anything. Ideally, its something that aligns with your niche or market well. Derek Shanahan, SuperRewards 8. Provide a Great Blog One great way to build your brand aside from social media is a factual, informative and great-looking blog. When you provide your potential customers with tips and strategies that they can implement in their daily lives, your brand should expand. Andrew Schrage, Money Crashers Personal Finance 9. Build Relationships With Bloggers We implement many other tools along with our social media strategy. One out-of-the-box tactic we like to use is blogger relationships for product features and product reviews. By creating relationships with bloggers, you can reach a niche audience that may not have seen your brand otherwise. Stefan Lewinger, Sock Fancy 10. Deliver a Great Service Customers are the best brand advocates. The most effective way to influence customers to talk about your brand is to build an amazing service that they genuinely love. Social media, content, advertising â" these are all important, but none are as important as customer word of mouth and a reputation for going above and beyond. Vik Patel, Future Hosting 11. Use Remarketing Brands with big budgets use billboards. Most of us dont have their budgets but, luckily, internet billboards are incredibly cheap. If your website is already generating traffic, only a fraction of that traffic is converting into leads or sales. Use remarketing to continue promoting your brand to these visitors across the internet for pennies a day. Ajay Paghdal, OutreachMama

Is a Career in Family Medicine Still worth the Investment
Is a Career in Family Medicine Still worth the Investment Whether finishing their CE renewal or completing their last year of residency, the unique challenges that face hopeful doctors as they pursue their careers can make the future seem daunting. Some setbacks that young developing healthcare professionals face while pursuing their medical careers include hefty student loans, several years of schooling, and long hours on the job. These difficulties can leave anyone unsure about their future in family medicine. For individuals who are pursuing a career in family medicine, here are the pros and cons this path can have and what the future holds for this specific practice. Variety of Patients As a professional in family medicine, you will be able to work with a variety of individuals at a variety of stages in their lifespan. You will be able to focus on all aspects of an individualâs life and how those aspects influence their well-being as you work to develop a diagnosis. By working with a diverse group of patients and solving an assortment of problems, your days as a family doctor will never feel the same. It is expected in the years to come that a large portion of individuals seeking medical attention will be elderly individuals, due to the rising life expectancy of baby boomers and the specific medical issues they may face at their age. Spectrum of Knowledge As a family practitioner, you will be expected to diagnose, treat, and help prevent a variety of diseases and injuries that commonly occur in the general population. You will be comfortable talking to your patients about various problems they present throughout their lifetime. A career in family medicine will require you to stay on your toes and never settle for routine. In some instances you may need to refer your patients to specialists. Yearly Income Family doctors tend to make around $221,419 a year. While these earnings tend to vary with a physicianâs number of years in practice, the geographic region of their practice, the amount of hours worked each week, and other contributing factors, this yearly salary for family practitioners is on the low end for doctors. Individuals who specialize in a specific form of medicine will make a higher salary than doctors with a general knowledge of ailments that face families. While many individuals pursue family medicine for reasons other than making money, this lower income may present problems when doctors work to pay off student loans. Meaningful Relationships In this community-based medicine practice, family doctors can cultivate meaningful relationships with their patients by working with them and their families throughout their lifetime. Family medicine is one of the more social practices of medicine and requires good bedside manners. As you develop connections with your patients, your work can feel more meaningful and satisfying while handling issues on a personal level and helping to alleviate the worries and problems your patients develop. Expected Job Growth The demand for family practitioners is expected to grow 10% by 2024. While family doctors will continue to be needed, the advances in technology can stifle this growth. With new technology allowing doctors to treat more patients in less amounts of time, hospitals and other healthcare facilities are expected to higher fewer family practitioners. In addition to technology limiting job opportunities, many physicians assistants and nurse practitioners are equipped with the skills necessary to carry out the routine duties of physicians, making them more valuable, cost-effective employees. Employment in Rural and Low-Income Areas Family doctors can expect to find work available in rural and low-income areas. These locations tend to display a lack in family physicians more than others. States who reported a higher employment of family and general practitioners include California, Florida, Missouri, Texas and Illinois. Anticipated Law Changes With the new presidential administration beginning to implement new laws and regulations, itâs anticipated that the Affordable Care Act is up for either repeal or renewal. While changing and reforming the ACA wonât happen overnight, the healthcare industry can expect to see uncertainty in the near future. In the past, some physicians had experienced a significant amount of strain on their practices from the statutes of ACA. Any future regulation shifts could possibly have a similar effect.

Dont report sexual harassment (in most cases)
Dont report sexual harassment (in most cases) Why Im not deleting this post There were not laws to protect women in 2006. It was a scary, lonely time for women. We didnât always have language to describe what was happening to us at work. When you reported sexual harassment in 2006 you got fired. And there were no repercussions for the harasser because no one cared. In 2019, we are making progress in supporting victims, but we still have a long way to go. And we cant know how far weâve come unless we save evidence of what life was like before. â"Penelope, Aug. 2, 2019 ****** Sexual harassment in American work life is pervasive as much as 80 percent in some sectors. But most women dont stand a chance of winning a lawsuit. So having a plan to deal with the problem is a good idea for all women. When it comes to harassment, Georgia Gatsiou, chef at Beard Papa, says: I would talk to him myself. I am aggressive like that. You should probably take that approach as well. Most sexual harassment isnt severe enough to hold up in court, and the law isnt strong enough to protect you from most types of retaliation. So unless your safety is at risk, youre usually best off handling the harasser yourself rather than reporting him to human resources. To win a lawsuit, courts require proof that harassment was severe and pervasive in the work environment, according to Alisa Epstein of New York-based law firm Samuelson, Hause Samuelson. And that employee handbook becomes important too. Gatsiou is typical of employee handbook readers: Its big. Ive read a lot of things in that handbook. Maybe theres something about harassment. I dont know. But when you report to human resources, you must follow your companys policy precisely or you risk losing your ability to take the company to court. After youve filed a report, human resources will protect the company, not you. Human resource executives talk about their concern for harassment. But, according to Jim Weliky of Boston-based law firm Messing, Rudavsky Weliky, most human resource departments dont live up to their propaganda. The law is set up to encourage a company to take proscribed steps to protect itself from liability rather than to protect your emotional stability, or, for that matter, your career. Once you take action against a harasser, retaliation is your biggest problem. Very few retaliation cases we have were not triggered by reporting the problem to human resources, says Weliky. But not all retaliation is strong enough to make it to court. Retaliation is usually subtle: fewer invitations to lunch, a cubicle that isolates you from office networks, and project assignments that are boring. That sort of retaliation effectively holds back your career without standing up in court. Just because you dont have a lawsuit doesnt mean you need to put up with harassment or retaliation. It means you need to take things into your own hands. Your goal should be to stop the harassment without hurting your career. No small feat, but possible. This is a negotiable moment, says Carol Frohlinger, attorney and author of Her Place at the Table: A Womans Guide to Negotiating Five Key Challenges to Leadership Success. Before going to human resources, have a frank conversation with the person making you uncomfortable. Be clear on what behavior is harassing and that you dont like it. As long as he doesnt repeatedly refuse to negotiate like saying, Youre so premenstrual and walking away, Frohlinger said, you should negotiate things for yourself. As in any important negotiating session Frohlinger advises that you assess your best alternative to a negotiated agreement, or BATNA. Your BATNA is probably to leave the company. But you should let your opponent feel that your BATNA is to go to human resources. Because no matter how arrogant he is, he will not be happy about being dragged into a he said-she said mess before the human resources department. When you negotiate, aim high: If your harasser is your boss, ask for help to switch departments, and ask to go to a better department with a top manager. Its in your harassers interest to help you. Or, if a co-worker is harassing you, make sure the co-worker appreciates that you handled things yourself. You save the co-worker a lot of problems by not reporting him. These are ways to decrease the chances of retribution while squelching the harassing behavior. If the harasser will not negotiate with you, assess your power versus his. Sexual harassment is more about the balance of power than what has been said, advises Weliky. When Kate, a high-powered New York City lawyer, was young and working with a managing director, she recalled an incident in which he asked her to bring the papers by my hotel room, and dont worry if Im only wearing a towel. She thought the comment was ludicrous and told the whole office. I could do that because I was on my way up in that firm, and he was doing poorly, she said. He didnt have a lot of ways to make my life difficult. In fact, someone told his wife and she bawled him out in front of his co-workers. A great situation, but most of you cannot depend on your harassers wife for vigilante law enforcement. If the balance of power is not in your favor, and you get nowhere negotiating, find a new job and leave the offending companyin that orderbecause its always easier to find a job when you have a job, even if you hate the job you have. There is plenty to do in this world that does not require you to work in companies that enable a boys club atmosphere. There are a lot of men who feel alienated in this atmosphere too. Find those men and work with them. Then get a lot of power in your career and create a workplace culture you believe in.

Business Travel Must Have Anti-Sickness Essentials Kit for Air Travels - Cubicle Chic
Business Travel Must Have Anti-Sickness Essentials Kit for Air Travels - Cubicle Chic Business Travel Must Have: Anti-Sickness Essentials Kit for Air Travels Health Life, Lifestyle, Travel December 20, 2016 0 CommentsWhether youâre flying for work reasons or going home to see family during holiday season, airplane travel is sometimes unavoidable in this day and age. If you follow me on Instagram, you know I travel a decent amount for work as well as leisure. Earlier this year, weâve discussed how to dress for airplane travels and how to keep your sanity during business trip, Now, I want to share with you my secret weapon, ace up my sleeve, and the one and only method thatâs TRIED AND TRUE⦠my âanti-sickness essentialsâ kit! The truth is that the airplanes that we travel in are filthy, filthy, FILTHY environments. Yes, they filter the air and yes other modes of public transportation are equally filthy. But thereâs something about being in close proximity to the screen in front of you (which has been touched, sneezed on, and been in contact with GOD-knows-what), and being in that confined space for more than 5 hours that amp lifies the effects of the germs. How many of you always get sick from traveling, especially via air? I know I used to. And with the advice of my genius fiancé, I now carry with me these 5 travel anti-sickness essentials. They have again and again prevented me from catching a cold/flu ever since I started using them religiously.Disclaimer: This is NOT a sponsored post. I happen to use a lot of Target products I think theyâre easily found everywhere! Also, I am not a medical professional, nor do I have clinical evidence that these products are the causative agents that keep you from getting sick. These statements are only based on my experience and what has worked for me. Letâs look into what they are and what theyâre for: 1) Hand sanitizer â" to keep YOU cleanIf youâre the type that is always unconsciously touching your face, rubbing your eyes, picking on that unripe pimple (ewâ¦), you need this hand sanitizer by your side at all times.I personally sanitize m y hands (only when I travel, I have to admit) at least once every 2-3 hours when Iâm traveling. That means Iâm sanitizing my hands when I come out of the bathroom, when I pass through security when Iâve taken my passport back from the customs people, when Iâm settled into my seat on a plane. Basically, whenever my hands have come in contact with other things, I sanitize them right afterwards.2) Sanitizing wipes â" to keep your environment cleanThis is my special weapon against the germs that youâre practically BURIED in when youâre in a plane. Yes, that includes first class. People go to sleep in those luxurious pods, too, donât be fooled into thinking theyâre cleaner! But for most of us, sitting close to the screen in front of you, arms of the chair, the window next to you, youâre being exposed to alllll sorts of germs left behind by the passenger ahead of you. To combat that, the first thing I do after I settle down and buckle up, is that I take out t he sanitizing wipe, and just wipe the entire around that my hands could possibly touch. INCLUDING the air vents over your head! This is a good habit to get in wherever you are, truthfully, if you want to develop an anti-sickness lifestyle.3) Surgical masks â" to prevent breathing in germsThis accessory is not for the faint of heart. And yes, I am recommending it to you poor unfortunate souls who EW ALWAYS getting sick. I am going to be honest in that I very rarely indulge in this practice myself. I tend to do this more on international flights where I am sleep deprived AND buried in germs. Because letâs face it, whoâs not going to stare at a person that looks like this? But trust me when I say that in those dire situations where I was forced to wear the surgical masks, it helped me avoid getting sick and combining this with all the other tricks Iâve shared with you, at the very least, gives you complete peace of mind. So itâs ugly, yes, but itâs also a really ef fective cold prevention accessory!4) Immune System Boost â" keeping you HEALTHYI mean, if this supplement basically tastes like carbonated orange juice, why not? Thatâs how I feel about taking supplements like Airborne or EmergenC. Yes, in most scenarios you are just making your pee more nutritional than normal (most of the extra supplement you take is excreted in urine because your body doesnât need it) but if it tastes so good and give your immune system a well-deserved boost for cold prevention, just do it!5) Zinc supplement â" nipping a cold in the budDespite some controversies about using zinc a remedy, itâs worked for me whenever Iâve felt the early onset of cold symptoms. I take it for about a day or two, and to me it feels like I nipped the cold in the bud. WebMD generally recommends it for shortening the common cold as well.P.S. Please beware that there are other controversies and side effect of zinc supplement when taken in excess. Educate yourself on these side effects before taking them, and remember: moderation is key!Disclaimer: This is NOT a sponsored post. I happen to use a lot of Target products I think theyâre easily found everywhere! Also, I am not a medical professional, nor do I have clinical evidence that these products are the causative agents that keep you from getting sick. These statements are only based on my experience and what has worked for me.
